Hi, I liked the contents of your book, I am a Sr. Analyst at a non-for profit organization and was wondering if I could get a PDF copy of your book? - email: ebarrios@_._

Thanks!

My reply:
I removed your original comment to remove the email adrs.
A PDF version is something i'm definitely going to do in the future, and i'll be happy to send you a copy as soon as I have one. As this is the first public release, i want to wait a while to get reader comments, let the contents stabilize, and then do a printable PDF version.
Thanks very much for your interest.
cheers.

Under design tips, I'd include this from the Pragmatic Programmer by Thomas and Hunt:

Don't Repeat Yourself (DRY).

Every piece of information (data or algorithm) should have one and only one authoritative source.

MJL

I've only skimmed a couple of sections, but what I've seen is great - I'm going to link to this for my own software engineering course.

Do you want a hand at copyediting - there are a few typos, etc., that I noticed.

Damith C. Rajapakse said...

Thanks for the comment MJL.
DRY is mentioned under "implementation tips", but as you say, it is relevant at design-level too.
Any form of collaboration/help is most welcome. Could you drop me an email at damith[at]comp.nus.edu.sg ?

Thanks very much for the kind words Deepak. I'm sure there are many ways you could help improve this effort. Could you drop me an email at damith[at]comp.nus.edu.sg ?

On "Tips for writing to project report" the slides regarding technical writing are no longer available.

Excellent work, this has helped my project immensely. Especially useful are the teams and risks pages!
Bravo on a job well done.

Damith C. Rajapakse said...

Thanks Richard,
I'm glad you found it useful. I would love to know more about the project course you are taking. Please drop me an email at damith[at]comp.nus.edu.sg

Thanks for letting me know about the broken link. It will be removed in the next update.

Dear Mr. Damith,

Thank you very much for the useful guide. I am a Vietnamese IT student, and I had many troubles in my first Software Engineering class. At that time, I found some interesting advice in your book, and it really helped me a lot. But in my class, not everyone is good at English. May I translate your guide to Vietnamese, so that it's easier for my classmates to read?

I will try to keep the book in its primitive state, and give credit to your website. Hope you will accept my suggestion.

PS: I am sorry if my English isn't good enough. You can communicate with me over my email: lessontester@yahoo.com

“Software and cathedrals are much the same – first we build them, then we pray.” This is a quote from Sam Redwine. He originally said it at the 4th International Software Process Workshop and published in Proceedings of the 4th International Software Process Workshop, Moretonhampstead, Devon, U.K., 11-13 May 1988, IEEE Computer Society.

You have already done a very good job.
But I have both a suggestion and a request for software engineering document templates, alongwith a sample real world project.
Unfortunately, I couldnt find any such resource after searching google for years.
I hope you will help out.

i think for navigation purpose, it will be better if there is a next/previous page link at the bottom or the top. so we do not have to click the toc and find the next chap.

Hi Mate,

Excellent book Damith,
I think this book is suitable for everyone, even this is very much applicable for the industry too, there is not much books available about software engineering best practices.
I would glad if this could be extended to be a "software engineering best practices for the industry".

Appreciate if you can send me a pdf copy to ruchith@gmail.com

Thank you,
Ruchith

No matter how 'green' this person appears to be, it is well worth spending time to help him learn the skills needed for the project.

Hi professor, generally I agree with what you are suggesting. I would like to know the time limit for helping / teaching the guy. It is unwise to spend the whole semester just to teach him. I would like to know when we should give up on him. Thanks.
